Generation-X. It's what the baby boomers call kids born before 1981. They call them "Gen-Xers" because they supposedly disconnected themselves from the rest of society and associated themselves with nothing, hence the "X." (See also 'Malcolm X') Ice Cube has even been said to have called Generation-X "Generation Fuck Me."
But as these now twenty-somethings had a label forced upon them, kids born after 1981 wanted to be a part of something "different" and so they call themselves "Generation-Y." How clever. They used the next letter after "X." Gen-Ysers -- notice my use of irony -- thought they'd be extra different and call themselves, on occasion, "Generation Why?," not as in "Why the fuck must they label themselves?," but as in "Why should I care?" As far as I'm concerned, people who call themselves Generation-Y should just call themselves Generation-X. I say this becuase they're trying so hard to be a part of something that happened before they were born that they aspire to be -- and at often times rip-off -- those who are a part of Gen-X.
Ever notice how things like slap bracelets and the use of the word "rad" have made their way back into our lives? It's because the so-called Generation-Y stole them from Generation-X.
Why do we feel this need to be lumped together under one label? I myself was born in 1984, which makes me a part of the above-said, so-called generation, and I feel no need at all to be a part of anything. I'm happy being Geoff. Not "Geoff -- member of Generation-Y." I don't give a shit what generation I was born in. And due to the faults in the Gregorian calendar (that's the calendar we use, for the unlearned.), it's possible that Generation-X is actually Generation-W, or even Generation-Y. Which brings up another question -- after Generation-Y, typically Generation-Z would follow. What do we do then? Do we start at Generation-A, or do we just drop the whole Generation naming ordeal all together?
I vote for the latter.
